“What on earth could be more luxurious than a sofa, a book and a cup of coffee.” – Anthony Trollope
My friend just moved to Seattle and two days ago she texted me “Come visit!!! … so much coffee and book stores here, you would love it!” Yes I would! As a matter of fact, I have visited Seattle before and I loved it. Seattle checks all the boxes for the things I love – Books, coffee, great food, great art and a lovely seascape to round it all up – perhaps its time to visit again. Reading my friend’s text in between reading about MFK Fisher’s first sea voyage in her food memoir “The Gastronomical Me” while I sipped my morning coffee transported me to sitting outside at a Tully’s, sipping a raspberry chocolate truffle coffee while enjoying the cool sea breeze (or maybe that was just a blast of air conditioning).
Anyway I’ve taken to reading in the morning and It’s amazing. I now wake up at 4:30am because I am a bit of a grouch in the morning and I need ease into my day. Reading a book and sipping a hot beverage relaxes me and I find that doing so after work is not the best. I am repeatedly interrupted in the evenings with bugging my husband a little bit, texting friends, cooking dinner, working out and obsessively researching cooking techniques; 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. is prime time in my house. It was hard to get up so early at first and I would end up falling asleep on the couch with my book open on my chest but now I sometimes wake up before my alarm so I am good. Once I am up, I brew some coffee in my french press, pack our lunches and snacks for the day, then I sit and read for an hour before I do a 30 minute workout, eat breakfast, shower and get dressed for work. By the time I get to the office I am alert, well fed and ready to perform my duties diligently.
An added bonus, I get to do my food related activities in the morning now. I mixed up my very own a sourdough starter a few days ago, and I get to monitor its progress and make notes as I feed it. I am also more mindful about what I eat these days so I am cooking breakfast and in turn improving my egg cookery skills. If I keep this up I may conquer the whole universe before 9 a.m. one day; for now, I will settle for a good book and a fresh cup of coffee.
